Farm storm & disaster plan

Get the farm, the family and the livestock ready before the weather turns. Pick your risk, tick off each step from the start of the season to the cleanup, and print an emergency card for the truck.

Right now: October: hurricane season runs to November 30, fall fires in the West and the first winter storms in the northern Plains and Rockies.

Winter storms & blizzards

When: November to March, with early storms in October and late ones in April on the northern Plains and in the Rockies.

Where: The northern Plains, the Midwest, the Rockies and the Northeast - and ice storms well into the South.

Watch = get ready

Winter Storm Watch: heavy snow, sleet or ice is possible, usually a day or two out.

Warning = act now

Winter Storm or Blizzard Warning: a dangerous storm is expected or happening. Blizzard means strong wind and blowing snow you can't see through.

Farm emergency card

Fill it in once, print it, and keep copies in the house, the truck and the barn - phones die and signal drops in a storm. Only put in what you're happy to have on paper.

What you would tell 911 or a neighbor: road, mile marker, gate.

e.g. 85 cows, 4 horses, 30 ewes
