Farm storm & disaster plan

Get the farm, the family and the livestock ready before the weather turns. Pick your risk, tick off each step from the start of the season to the cleanup, and print an emergency card for the truck.

Right now: October: hurricane season runs to November 30, fall fires in the West and the first winter storms in the northern Plains and Rockies.

Wildfires & grass fires

When: Summer and fall in the West. On the southern and central Plains, grass fires run on dry, windy days from late winter into spring.

Where: The West, the Great Plains and dry rangeland anywhere - fire moves fastest through cured grass in strong wind.

Watch = get ready

Fire Weather Watch: dangerous fire weather is possible in the next day or two.

Warning = act now

Red Flag Warning: warm, dry, windy weather now - any fire can spread fast. Evacuation orders come from local officials.

Farm emergency card

Fill it in once, print it, and keep copies in the house, the truck and the barn - phones die and signal drops in a storm. Only put in what you're happy to have on paper.

What you would tell 911 or a neighbor: road, mile marker, gate.

e.g. 85 cows, 4 horses, 30 ewes
