Farm storm & disaster plan

Get the farm, the family and the livestock ready before the weather turns. Pick your risk, tick off each step from the start of the season to the cleanup, and print an emergency card for the truck.

Right now: October: hurricane season runs to November 30, fall fires in the West and the first winter storms in the northern Plains and Rockies.

Floods

When: Spring snowmelt and heavy rain from March to June, and any time a hurricane or a slow storm stalls.

Where: River bottoms everywhere - along the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Red rivers in spring, and in hilly country where flash floods rise in minutes.

Watch = get ready

Flood Watch: flooding is possible. Be ready to move.

Warning = act now

Flood Warning: flooding is happening or about to. Flash Flood Warning: move to higher ground now.

Farm emergency card

Fill it in once, print it, and keep copies in the house, the truck and the barn - phones die and signal drops in a storm. Only put in what you're happy to have on paper.

What you would tell 911 or a neighbor: road, mile marker, gate.

e.g. 85 cows, 4 horses, 30 ewes

Your ticks and the card are saved only in this browser on this device - we never see them. A different phone or browser starts empty.
