Farm storm & disaster plan

Get the farm, the family and the livestock ready before the weather turns. Pick your risk, tick off each step from the start of the season to the cleanup, and print an emergency card for the truck.

Right now: October: hurricane season runs to November 30, fall fires in the West and the first winter storms in the northern Plains and Rockies.

Tornadoes & severe storms

When: Possible in any month. The peak is spring and early summer, with a smaller second season in late fall in the South.

Where: Most of the country east of the Rockies - the Plains, the Midwest and the South see the most.

Watch = get ready

Tornado Watch: be prepared - tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area.

Warning = act now

Tornado Warning: take action - a tornado has been seen or shows on weather radar. Go to shelter now.

Farm emergency card

Fill it in once, print it, and keep copies in the house, the truck and the barn - phones die and signal drops in a storm. Only put in what you're happy to have on paper.

What you would tell 911 or a neighbor: road, mile marker, gate.

e.g. 85 cows, 4 horses, 30 ewes

Your ticks and the card are saved only in this browser on this device - we never see them. A different phone or browser starts empty.
