Farm storm & disaster plan

Get the farm, the family and the livestock ready before the weather turns. Pick your risk, tick off each step from the start of the season to the cleanup, and print an emergency card for the truck.

Right now: October: hurricane season runs to November 30, fall fires in the West and the first winter storms in the northern Plains and Rockies.

Hurricanes & tropical storms

When: Atlantic season: June 1 to November 30, busiest from mid-August to mid-October.

Where: Gulf and Atlantic coast states - and far inland, where the rain floods rivers for days afterward.

Watch = get ready

Hurricane Watch: hurricane conditions are possible. It is issued about 48 hours before tropical-storm-force winds are expected - the time to get ready.

Warning = act now

Hurricane Warning: hurricane conditions are expected, about 36 hours ahead. Finish getting ready and leave if you are told to.

Farm emergency card

Fill it in once, print it, and keep copies in the house, the truck and the barn - phones die and signal drops in a storm. Only put in what you're happy to have on paper.

What you would tell 911 or a neighbor: road, mile marker, gate.

e.g. 85 cows, 4 horses, 30 ewes
